Trumpet Type:Connstellation Bell Diameter:5 1/8 inch Finish:Silver & Brass Key:Bb Valve Material:Nickel Plated 1961 Conn Connstellation 38B! “Late Model”. Widely acknowledged as one of the all-time great trumpets ever made! And 1961 is right in the sweet “golden era” for Conn, and for Connstellations in particular. A host of jazz greats played Connstellations including Chet Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and lots of others. Please see in photos, Conns mid-60s chart of "darkest sound" & "big bore feel" - the 38B is the winner in both!!
Please note, the horn needs a lot of work to be fully functional. Thats why its very affordably priced. But the horn actually plays well now (see video). And the basic “bones” of it are in great condition! My plan was to get it fixed eventually but I need to let it go now. PLEASE READ description for the problems it has, along with the great features.
Problems:
- The 1st valve trigger is missing (I actually prefer it without a trigger personally)
- Every slide has significant dents and damage: tuning slide and all 3 valve slides. They still move in and out fine. And seal. But they are badly dented. See photos.
-3rd valve slide has a gap of how it fits into receiver. See photo.
-The silver plating is mostly there. But the finish they used to put on top (“Lustre-Conn”) is spotty in many places - see photo of bell area. It doesnt have that shiny silver look that it once did. Lacquer on brass parts is mostly gone.
Features!
-This horn has the huge 5 1/8 inch bell that gave these horns that rich and vibrant Connstellation tone. Way bigger than most trumpets which tend to be less than 5”. Conn described the bell material as “Electro-D Bell. Special process nickel-plated brass bell.”
- along with the big bell is the “wide wrap”. More room for your left hand.
-The “hard nickel-plated pistons” are in great condition, see photos! They move well.
-Almost no dents in the main body and bell section of the horn (although all slides are dented, as mentioned above). The “bones” of the trumpet are in great shape and would fix up great!
With TLC this trumpet can be a gorgeous Connstellation!
