Coogan, Timothy Patrick - Ireland Since the Rising
From Reviewer: Published during the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising in 1966 the author charts the emergence of Ireland from the turbulent years of the independence years through the civil war and the rocky and turbulent early years of the state through to the 1960s when after so many years of gloomy prospects the future for Ireland was starting to show some chinks of light. The author gives us a good insight into the many struggles that the emerging Irish state faced both economically and socially after independence. The repressive role of the church socially, the long lasting civil war bitterness, the rise of Fianna Fail as well as the creation of Fine Gael out of Cumman nGaedheal and the many false dawns for Labour are all looked at as Ireland bit by bit developed a stable democracy. While also at the same time despite her size Ireland gradually emerged on the world stage through membership of the UN often playing an international role that was remarkable given Irelands size. Being a journalist the author writes in a much more conversational manner which makes the book very accessible rather then an academic work.
De Rosa, Peter - Rebels:
From Publisher: On Easter Monday of 1916, a thousand Irish men and women, armed with pikes and rifles, took over the center of Dublin and proclaimed a republic. It was a rash, doomed, symbolic uprising, and the rebel leaders knew it. Crack British troops killed and wounded hundreds of the rebels in the week of fighting, and British artillery shells left Dublins city center in ruins. But the Rising of 1916 was not in vain. The short-lived insurrection and the subsequent executions of sixteen rebel leaders galvanized the Irish people. The overthrow of seven centuries of British rule in Ireland began on Easter Monday, 1916. In Rebels, Peter de Rosa, author of the bestselling Vicars of Christ, tells the story of the 1916 Rising in all its terror and beauty. With the dramatic flair of a novelist and the scrupulous accuracy of a professional historian, de Rosa brings to life the people, passions, politics, and repercussions of this historic event.
Hennessy, Maurice N. - Wild Geese:
From AI: Wild Geese by Maurice N. Hennessy is a rich and evocative exploration of the Irish diaspora and the enduring legacy of the Irish in foreign lands. The book takes its title from the historical term "Wild Geese," which refers to the thousands of Irish soldiers who left Ireland, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries, to serve in foreign armies, notably in France and Spain. Hennessy delves into the experiences of these individuals, their motivations, and the cultural implications of their migration. The narrative begins by contextualizing the political and social conditions in Ireland that led to the exodus of the Wild Geese. Hennessy discusses the impact of English colonization, religious persecution, and economic hardships that drove many to seek their fortunes abroad. Through personal stories and historical accounts, he illustrates the challenges faced by these Irish emigrants as they adapted to new cultures while striving to maintain their Irish identity.
Pakenham, Thomas - Year of Liberty:
From AI: Year of Liberty by Thomas Pakenham is a compelling historical narrative that chronicles the events surrounding the Irish Rebellion of 1798. In this meticulously researched account, Pakenham delves into the socio-political landscape of Ireland during a time of significant turmoil and change, exploring the roots of discontent that fueled the uprising. The book begins by setting the stage for the rebellion, detailing the oppressive conditions faced by the Irish population under British rule. Pakenham examines the rise of revolutionary ideas inspired by the American and French revolutions, highlighting the growing dissatisfaction among the Irish people, particularly the United Irishmen—a group advocating for political reform and equality. As the narrative unfolds, Pakenham vividly depicts the lead-up to the rebellion, including key figures and events that played a crucial role in shaping the uprising. He captures the fervor and idealism of the revolutionaries, as well as the challenges they faced in mobilizing support and executing their plans.
