Set in London during and after the Second World War, the novel follows the obsessive and passionate relationship of rising writer Maurice Bendrix, and Sarah Miles, the wife of a prominent civil servant.

Examining the contradictions of Greenes Catholic faith, it was the fourth and final instalment of Greenes tetralogy of Catholic novels, following Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, and The Heart of the Matter.

Former owners inscription to head of dust wrapper front flyleaf.


CONDITION

In the publishers original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. A touch of shelf wear to back strip tail, with light spotting to text block fore edge. Dust wrapper back strip age toned, with small losses of paper to back strip head and tail. Light spotting to wraps. Small tape repair to dust wrapper reverse at tail of fold over front joint. Inscription to dust wrapper front flyleaf head. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
