With a detailed biography of the life of La Bruyere to the first volume.
La Bruyere was a philosopher and moralist. His works brought him many readers and many enemies due to his controversial views. His work Caracteres attacked many powerful academics in France at the time.
CONDITION
In half morocco with marbled boards. Externally, very smart with just some minor rubbing to the head and tail of spines as well as to extremities. Small crack to top left corner of the rear board to volume I. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper to volume I. Both hinges to volume I are slightly strained but firm. The rear hinge to volume II is slightly strained but firm. The front hinge to volume III is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot throughout.
