I am spanning millennia but there is much to say about curio cabinets filled by the rich and powerful with valuable naturalia like those still preserved in public collections housing treasures from Wittelsbach family, and we know that Nautilus cups have been fashionable drinking vessels adorning the tables at the most exuberant festivities the Medici family have ever hosted. And of course there are the Dutch famous for their trade and wealth and good taste, they became notorious for the tulip fever paying staggering prices for these plants, but there also was what I may call a Shell Fever in those times when beautiful exotic species like Thatcheria mirabilis would fetch easily amounts that by today would be more than enough to acquire an apartment with Central Park View. I mention all this to say that you are indeed dignified as a collector dedicating your interest to seashells, but there is more to it and now I want to make my point: after all we are dealing here with natural resources produced by living animals and that puts us in responsability. 1. Identification: Spondylus gloriosus (Dall, Bartsch & Rehder, 1938), Luminao Barrier Reef, Guam, Mariana Islands, on drop of coral reef lagoon in 40m depth, ex Takahashi 1991, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: Rarest Lemon yellow and undulating spines. A gem specimen taken with utmost delicacy by diver in 40m depth and later cleaned by myself all by hand with ultrasonic equipment, this is a process that takes endless hours as these shells come totally encrusted with sponges (easy to remove) and small red coral (very difficult to remove) and that means each individual spine has been cleaned from all sides with the slightest touch possible in order to prevent it from breaking, and you know how fragile these spines are! For me this is one of the miracles of the sea and I present this favourite specimen of mine according to the latest nomenclature which I find rather useful as it combines the rare Midway Island population together with those outside the Philippines as the name giving taxon for gloriosus, and the P.I. polulation which was previously known as multimuricatus is now described as visayensis which is considered a subsidies of linguafelis.
