Rafer Lewis Johnson (born August 18, 1935) is an American former decathlete and film actor. He was the 1960 Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, having won silver in 1956. He had previously won a gold in the 1955 Pan American Games. He was the USA team's flag bearer at the 1960 Olympics and lit the Olympic flame at the Los Angeles Games in 1984.
In 1968, he, football player Rosey Grier and journalist George Plimpton tackled Sirhan Sirhan moments after he had fatally shot Robert F. Kennedy.
After he retired from athletics, Johnson turend to acting, sportscasting, public service and was instrumental in creating the California Special Olympics. His acting career included appearances in The Sins of Rachel Cade (1961), the Elvis Presley film Wild in the Country (1961), Pirates of Tortuga (1961), None but the Brave (1965), two Tarzan films with Mike Henry, The Last Grenade (1970),The Six Million Dollar Man, Roots: The Next Generations (1979) and the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill, opposite Timothy Dalton.
Rafer Lewis Johnson (né le 18 août 1935) est un ancien acteur américain décathlonien et cinéaste. Médaillé d’or olympique au décathlon en 1960, il avait remporté la médaille d’argent en 1956. Il avait déjà remporté une médaille d’or aux Jeux panaméricains de 1955. Il a été le porte-drapeau de l'équipe américaine aux Jeux olympiques de 1960 et a allumé la flamme olympique aux Jeux de Los Angeles en 1984.
En 1968, le footballeur Rosey Grier et le journaliste George Plimpton s’attaquent à Sirhan Sirhan peu après qu’il ait abattu Robert F. Kennedy.
Après avoir pris sa retraite de l’athlétisme, Johnson a évolué vers le théâtre, la diffusion sportive, le service public et a joué un rôle déterminant dans la création des California Special Olympics. Sa carrière d'acteur comprend des apparitions dans The Sins of Rachel Cade (1961), dans Wild in the Country (1961), de Elvis Presley, dans Pirates of Tortuga (1961), None but the Brave (1965), deux films de Tarzan avec Mike Henry, The Last Grenade (1970), L'homme de six millions de dollars, Roots: The Next Generations (1979), et License to Kill, de James Bond en 1989, en face de Timothy Dalton.
