Francois Laurin (1826-1901) engaged contemporary painters and artists to decorate his ceramics raising the process to a fine art form. The famous French ceramist Ernest Chaplet trained with Sevres then worked with Laurin at Bourg-la-Reine. While there in 1871-72 he helped develop the barbotine slip process with Felix Lafond before eventually leaving to establish his own business in 1874. The slip process allowed painting directly onto the rough clay as an artist applies paint to a canvas, raising the craft to an art form and usually resulting in ‘impressionist' effects. After Chaplet left, Laurin continued using the process.
Ary Gambard (Feb. 18th 1852-1897) was the son of Henri-Augustin Gambard & Elisabeth Pierrette Dutilleux. He was a painter, and illustrator/graphic artist of e.g. Le Bambou: Périodique Illustré with wood engravings 1893 (in Met Collection). He illustrated the book Malingreux by Charles Richard, (Brunhoff & Cie, Paris, 1886) and Jean Rameau's Poemes Fantasques, (Monnier & Cie, Paris 1883 with 28 duo-tone etchings). He also illustrated works by Byron, Chateaubriand, Leon Cladel, Camille Flammarion, Natesa Sastri and an 1892 edition of Paul et Virginie
Gambard is briefly mentioned in Slitine Florence: La Faïencerie Laurin à Bourg-la-Reine. In: Sèvres. Revue de la Société des Amis du musée national de Céramique, n°19, 2010. pp. 117-124 : “If the names of Jeaneret, Taffin, Gaudineau or Gambard are less famous, their paintings of flowers or figures nevertheless attracted the attention of commentators of the time”…. “The ‘Laurin Process' was considered to be a revolution which opened an infinite field to the imagination of artists.” (google translation)
