- On his eighth album, Clint Black, the thinking mans country celeb, is at his most dynamic. He moves energetically through a repertoire ranging from uptempo country rockers such as the title track to sweet, romantic ballads like "That Something in My Life," with endless surprises in between, including the bluesy "Bitter Side of Sweet." Some of the best material here is collaborative; "Our Kind of Love," with the assistance of Alison Krauss and Union Station, effectively examines the bluegrass roots of country music, and Black and Krausss harmonies are particularly wonderful. One of the most spectacular songs on NOTHIN BUT THE TAILLIGHTS is the totally acoustic, low-key "Ode to Chet," which features some of country musics best guitar players, including Chet Atkins himself.
Professional Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (8/15/97, p.75) - "...Other than the spirited title tune and a bluegrass ballad with Alison Krauss, this is the dullest set of songs since, well, his last album." - Rating: C+
